Developer insights: how many software developers have an academic degree In Germany?

Map of Germany with 9 sample cities highlighted, showing a divide between North West and South East. In the cities of North West less than 60% of software developers have an academic qualification. In the South East, the number is higher than 60%

In my research I looked at 9 sample cities. And it turns out that among those 9 cities there is a divide — between North West (lower than 60%) and South East (higher than 60%). Who would have thought?

North West: higher share of non-academics

Ruhrgebiet, Lower Saxony and Hamburg have reputations of being unpretentious cities, with Hamburg having different layers and also being known for trade and a long tradition of a rich merchant class.

In the other cities, more than 60% have graduated from some form of academic schooling, be that university, university of applied sciences or university of cooperative education.

In Germany, academic qualification does not exclude dual training. A growing number of universities require students to get practical training while studying.

Berlin attracting expats

Personally, I was surprised by Berlin. Specifically here, where the number of career changers is (anecdotally) high I would have expected a lower number. Or maybe they study humanities first and then go to bootcamp? What an enrichment for the field.
