The German data provider Destatis has published its most recent analysis on student and trainee numbers in Germany. And Germany finds itself on the losing end: Corona and lower birth rates lead to lower numbers of students.

MINT subjects

In 2021, 307,000 students enrolled in MINT subjects. That is a decrease of 6.5% in comparison to the winter semester of 2020/21.

37.7% of all students in Germany opted for a MINT subject. The highest share had been reached in 2015, with 40.5%.

In 2022, we see 305,153 enrolled. This is a reduction of 0.6% to the previous year. However, the share of students choosing MINT has risen to 38.3%. In 2017, the number was at 351,400.

Men make up 64.9% of all MINT first-year students. In informatics (computer science), the share goes up to 77%, in comparison to interior architecture with 13% and automotive engineering with 92%.

The overall number of MINT students has gown down over the last years.
