Developer Insights: where are the women software developers in Germany? — 2023 numbers

The overall growth slows down again — an indicator that negative occurrences like recession and layoffs have more negative consequences for women?

The situation in 2022 summarized

In last year’s edition it became clear that the growth rates (not absolutes!) had reached new highs in the history of the developer profession in Germany.

The same goes for women, a strongly underrepresented group among developers and IT experts in general. Women and men are comparatively easy to track in the datasets (detailed explanation here). Other groups like people with disabilities are not.

In 2022, despite high growth rates, the industry did not put women on par with men in this profession. Local shares of between 5 and 18%, and an overall number of slightly over 40,000 did not bode well for innovative ability in Germany.

The status in 2023

In 2023 the overall growth, while still there, slowed down a bit. This might be related to a slower growth overall in the previous boom year of developer hiring.
