IT Insights: computer science & ICT students in Germany — 2023

The numbers rise slightly in comparison to 2021–22 (see article here). That being said, the percentages remain about the same.

One of the German statistics providers, Destatis, regularly publishes occupation and education numbers for various fields. In the area of IT & ICT, and specifically computer science, we get quite detailed numbers.

In 2022, 34,650 people graduated from computer science and ICT paths at German universities. We have almost 260k students in these fields in 2023.

It becomes apparent that:

  • The vast majority of students are men.
  • A significant share does not hold German citizenship — how can you sponsor juniors via schemes like Blue Card and others?
  • The share of women among non-citizens is palpably higher than among Germans

The students are distributed unevenly across the republic and its various federal states:

  • Schleswig-Holstein: 6,784
  • Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania…
